Puerto Vallarta #1 rated Food Tours
I have been coming to PV for almost 20 years now. While I know many business owners and a few locals who work in the service industry, I still do not know a whole lot about how the locals live.
By taking one of the many food tours offered by Vallarta Food Tours, in just 3-4 hours you learn so much, you will be in the know, like the locals! Taste local food, meet local people and visit hidden gems and places off the beaten touristy path. Taste food from street vendors who have been in business over 40 and 50 years!
Vallarta Food Tour’s mission is to help visitors and residents alike enjoy the best that Vallarta has to offer by highlighting off-the-beaten-path, “non-touristy” food and drinks along with a local insight of its treasures. Our love of Puerto Vallarta and Mexican culture inspired us to create the city’s finest culinary tour. We sampled the perfect mole, sipped on succulent tuba water and tasted fresh coconut from arguably the best coconut vendor in the country.
I took the Original Downtown Tour last month. $52 for adults. (For a couple dollars extra you even get a couple beers along the way!) You get 8 tastings of amazing regional cuisine, and that’s enough (more than enough!) to serve as a satisfying lunch. And you get a 3-4 hour cultural tour and walk of the city by an awesome tour guide who explains the food but also many local interesting tidbits of information and traditions.
There is a Bikes and Bites Tour. ($55). On a comfortable bike, cover 4.5 miles on this culinary tour, tasting regional dishes influenced by Aztec, Mayan, Toltec, Spanish and French cuisine. This tour is designed for moderate fitness levels. Prior cycling experience is required and all guests must be 18 or older.
Did someone say drinks?? Take the evening Mex-ology tour! Drink And Eat Your Way Through Downtown Vallarta. Tacos and Tequila are at the top of everyone’s list when they come to PV. This tour gives you both in one fun and food-filled evening. ($79).
- This 4-hour guided tour is perfect for dinner and will introduce you to the best indigenous spirits and regional cocktails in Vallarta.
- You will sample Tequila, Mezcal, Racilla, and local craft beer mixed into a regional cocktail by a master Mexican Mixologist. To keep you on your feet you will enjoy a few tacos along the way, including a one-of-a-kind seafood stuffed Jalapeño taco, carne asada taco, and more.
Vallarta Food Tours say, “Our goal is to ensure that all of our tour participants have a fantastic time and leave with a real confidence to continue their exploration of our beautiful city. Si Senor on the Beach in Puerto Vallarta
We love this place! Great food, great prices, great location!
Stop by for breakfast, lunch, dinner or cocktails and snacks. Try any of the savory Mexican dishes and you’ll taste how authentic food is supposed to be. The staff only uses the freshest ingredients to bring out the flavors of the many regions of Mexico. The menu features guacamole made to order table side, classic Oaxacan mole negro, and Pacific coast ceviche and seafood cocktails.
You can enjoy your meal on the beach at a dining table or relax in a chaise lounge chair. There are big umbrellas for your comfort. You can also be seated in the more formal dining room next to the beach.
Their History….
When the opportunity came to take over the restaurant space at Hotel Emperador, we took it. In a vacation destination city like Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, it is all about location.
Si Señor Beach is the third Puerto Vallarta restaurant in the family owned chain and opened in October 2012. There is easy access from streets Rodolfo Gómez and Amapas and it is just one block south of the new Los Muertos Pier on Los Muertos Beach. Our views are simply awesome.
We took the time to craft a menu that gives you a full scope of what we are all about and use only the freshest ingredients to create truly authentic Mexican food. The cuisine we offer is both classic and updated preparations of the regional dishes of Mexico. Classic moles, braised and slow roasted meats in traditional marinades, tangy ceviche, fresh guacamole, creamy flan, are all examples of the colorful flavors of Mexico that we serve.
The same passion for quality is echoed throughout every element of our restaurant. The staff is courteous, attentive to your needs and will make sure your dining experience is the best. We have Mexican fare in a contemporary, casual atmosphere, which includes a variety of seating options and it’s the perfect place to start your vacation day, have a business lunch or a romantic dinner. Our house is your house, so come join the family for a meal.

Puerto Vallarta Best gallery and Wine bar
We have been fans of Galleria Dante for years now. And we absolutely love the new addition, Di Vino Dante, which opened in 2013.
Galleria Dante and Di Vino Dante, even though two separate businesses, are both located in an old hacienda style villa at Basilio Badillo #269.
After meeting in Puerto Vallarta in 1986, Claire and Joe Guarniere, inspired by Dante and Beatrice and their mutual love of Italy, began their family business in 1988 with an Italian restaurant called “Pizza Joe” and a small classical art gallery.
In 1995, their passion for art outweighed the long hours in the restaurant business so they opened “Galleria Dante”, which is now the largest and most eclectic fine art gallery in Puerto Vallarta, exhibiting the works of more than 50 artists –from emerging to well established museum artists (both painters and sculptors). Of these artists 90% are Mexican-born. The countless pieces are arranged in the European “salon” style throughout the massive gallery’s eight rooms, including a beautiful open-air courtyard, which is my favorite part!
In 2013, Gena, born and raised in the family businesses, opened Di Vino Dante, a wine and Tapas bar overlooking the gallery’s sculpture garden which also offers larger plates. The restaurant also rotates art from the gallery, offering the opportunity for diners to purchase art while enjoying a fine glass of wine or cocktail. . During her second year at University “UBC” in Vancouver, British Columbia, she took “Wine Science”, to complete her Science credit. It changed her life. Growing up in an Italian family, surrounded by art and after numerous summers in Italy, she had never developed a taste for wine. With her interest peaked, and a new found love of wine, she took more wine classes, in what free time she had in completing her Fine Art degree. After studying wine theory and tasting hundreds of bottles of wine, she dreamed of how to work in the business.
Both business continue to evolve and grow, the gallery always in search of new artists, the wine bar offering new menu items and an extensive wine cellar. Later this season, Di Vino Dante will be opening the rooftop garden, which will also be available for special events and private parties.
Galleria Dante and Di Vino Dante are located at Basilio Badillo #269 in the Old Town / Romantic Zone of Puerto Vallarta. New artwork comes in on a regular basis, and the restaurant offers weekly specials, so even if you have visited Galleria Dante in the past, it is always worth another visit.

Galleria Dante and Di Vino Dante Tapas Restaurant Bar
Puerto Vallarta most beautiful Art Gallery, Galleria Dante and Di Vino Dante Tapas Restaurant Bar a must visit in while in Puerto Vallarta.
Galleria Dante is the largest fine Art gallery in Puerto Vallarta with more than 7000 square feet of show room and gardens on the first level. The gallery represents more than 60 emerging and established artists, of which the majority are Mexican artists. When Joe, Claire & Gena Guarniere purchased hacienda “Casa de Colores” in 1988 for their successful Italian restaurant “Pizza Joe” decorated with art treasures from their travels to Europe, little did they know that in 1995 they would be retiring from the restaurant to run a gallery full time. And once again it is a Casa filled with color!
The gallery is an eclectic blend of styles: abstract, classical, contemporary, surreal, expressionistic and impressionistic! Another unique point of Galleria Dante is the amount of sculpture exhibited indoors and out. We ship world wide! A complete inventory is posted to the website, where clients can also order online. Galleria Dante is open 9am to 5 pm, Monday thru Friday and in high season also open Saturday 9 am to 2 pm. Or private viewings, after hours can be arranged thru Di Vino Dante Restaurant.
In November of 2013 Di Vino Dante restaurant in Puerto Vallarta opened it’s doors on the 2nd floor, incorporating many unique spaces to exhibit art. Di Vino Dante Restaurant is a full service restaurant where the owner, Gena is knowledgeable about wine and art. There is indoor and outdoor seating, as well as an air-conditioned space. Puerto Vallarta Restaurants also opening in late 2015 is a roof top garden and terrace for the expanded menu and private parties. This is not only a relaxing place to dine, with great food and drinks, it is a work of art.

Walk Down Calle Basilio Badillo
In 1982, Basilio Badillo consisted of 3 small hotels and one or two businesses.
In 1988, Basilio Badillo was known for three restaurants, Roberto’s Puerto Nuevo, Pizza Joe and El Tucan (run by Memo who later opened Memo’s Pancake house) . These restaurants were so successful that more restaurants and other businesses started to relocate to this area.
In the mid-90’s there were 12 restaurants on the 200 block of Basilio Badillo, so for years it was known as “Restaurant Row,” or La Calle de los Cafés. Some restaurants closed, and fine shops started to take over. Now in 2015, there are more than 100 businesses in 5 short blocks of Basilio Badillo. There are 28 restaurants, 5 coffee shops, plus 5 specialty shops: chocolates, ice cream, crepes, 2 bakeries. 31 shops which include fine art and folk art galleries, clothing and jewelry. There are two great theatres! There is a hospital, yoga studio, dental offices, 4 pharmacies, 8 massage parlors and more. And for more than 30 years Alano which offers several 12 step programs in English. As a result, the area has been known for some years as the best place in town to hang out. Red Cabbage Restaurant – Hidden Gem in Puerto Vallarta
One of the locals in Vallarta showed us this place. Which is what I love. Ask the locals, “what is your favorite place to eat?” and you get answers of hidden gems!
But word is getting out! They were written up in Bon Appetit and New York Times!
The atmosphere is simple and casual, with walls covered in a selection of bohemian and eclectic artwork. Dinner selections feature menus from Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s fiestas. Funky and fun, this hidden spot pays homage to Frida and Diego in both decor and menu.
Authentic and traditional Mexican meals. Fantastic vegetarian menu and lots of great starters, soups and dinners to satisfy everyones taste. Everyone at my table loved the peanut soup. I found the mole sauce to be one of the best I have ever had! Homemade sauces and food cooked with love is what you find here.
When owner Lola Bravo first opened, people were worried for her. (Some 20 years ago). Choosing a place off the beaten path – and serving traditional Mexican meals….well, she does just fine! Word has spread, but you can still get a table here – most times.
Lola believes that the cuisine of Mexico is as varied as Chinese, Italian or French cuisine. Every region has its own style and specialties and every chef has their own way of creating a dish. The experience of Mexican food in the U.S. and Canada rarely encompasses the wide variety of flavors and ingredients found in classic Mexican cuisine.
Preparation can be very labor intensive and there are no shortcuts to producing the best this cuisine has to offer. It is this type of food that Lola and Carmen create at The Red Cabbage Cafe and Cooking School. – There is also a cookbook and DVD available.
Red Cabbage gets consistently high ratings on TripAdvisor .
This is a non-smoking restaurant.
Cash Only. And reservations suggested – by phone. Call after 3pm. 223-0411
It is a fantastic walk from Centro Vallarta! – Go east on Calle Lazaro Cardenas past the Emiliano Zapata Market to the end of the street at the river where you turn right onto Calle Rivera del Rio. About two blocks further, just around the curve in the road you will see the brightly lit Red Cabbage Cafe!
From first glance you don’t know what to expect. It looks just like a simple restaurant nestled in the heart of Puerto Vallarta. There’s nothing flashy or extravagant on the outside to let you know that the restaurants there. Its literally one of those places where you need to know where your going or you could miss it.
But everyone comes for the fantastic home cooked food and flavors! From the first bite of your appetizers to the last bite of your entrees…I feel confident you will be in food heaven.

Villa Mercedes Petit Hotel Celebrates Diversity
Over the last 75 years, Puerto Vallarta has grown! But not lost its charm.
I love that in Puerto Vallarta’s Romantica Zone and Old Towne, you have so many unique special boutique properties to choose from.
On my recent trip, I discovered a “new” place to stay. VILLA MERCEDES PETIT HOTEL. Amapas 175, Playa Los Muertos. I have walked by here before, but never had the chance to see inside! Just peaking in the front door, you can tell that something very special is inside!
Adults only, pet friendly, gay friendly, Villa Mercedes is a fantastic gem! A PETIT HOTEL with boutique type accommodations steps away from Los Muertos Beach. It has sort of a 50’s Palm Spring feel to me. Bright colors, simple and sleek lines and a bit eclectic.
Here is the cool part; Villa Mercedes is located in this historic hacienda-style building built in the early 1950 ́s, at the time the first and only “finca” or weekend retreat in the once secluded and remote Los Muertos Beach.
The property takes its name after its original owner, who was a real trailblazer in PV and one of the earlier settlers. They have preserved most of its original architectural character through generations. Now the property is ran and owned by Mercedes grandson, who is gay. They have been a member of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) since 2009. And an active member of the Puerto Vallarta LGBT Business Association, and was one of the first supporters and still is an active supporter of Puerto Vallarta ́s Gay Pride.
Art and Mexican crafts mixed with contemporary eclectic define most of the carefully decorated spaces with wonderful murals by artist Ana Rifa, Zapoteco textiles, gorgeous vintage cement tile mosaics, and original historic architecture.
Connecting to the property is 116 Pulpito Gastro Bar (Formerly the old Kit Kat Lounge). Intimate dinner is served every night at Villa Mercedes Peitit Hotel´s courtyard. Drinks and appetizers are also available upon guests´ request in the pool bar or in the roof deck on the third floor. Guests can choose from two interesting menu choices: Pulpito 116 and Maia Inspired Cuisine. Breakfast is also served in the courtyard during the high season months of November to May. Service in the hotel´s courtyard and roof deck is open to guests and their friends from 9:00 AM to 11:30PM.
The property has a total of 16 lodging options ranging from studio rooms, jr. suites, master suites, and penthouses. Some include fully equipped kitchens, others have kitchenettes. All have been upgraded with AC, flat-screen TVs, wifi access, cieling fans, temperpeudic mattress tops, safe boxes, mini-bars, and unique art, and decor, and textiles.
There is a courtyard at ground level with a pool, lounge area, food and bar service, and tropical landscaping. On the third floor there is a more private sun deck and roof garden accessible to guests and also available for events. – I just LOVE THIS PLACE. It’s a piece of Vallarta history!
